The RESOLVE Leadership Equation

A formula that describes how leadership stability is built, and how it breaks down.

Leadership performance is not determined by capability alone. Organisations are full of capable leaders who perform inconsistently, particularly when conditions become difficult. The question that matters is whether a leader sustains disciplined behaviour when pressure creates incentives to drift.

The RESOLVE Leadership Equation describes the relationship between the disciplines that sustain leadership effectiveness and the force that most commonly erodes it.

Leadership Stability under Pressure

= Conviction × Integrity × Accountability ÷ Pressure Distortion

Conviction is the clarity and stability of a leader’s commitment to purpose, strategy and priorities. Without conviction, leaders abandon direction when conditions become uncomfortable. Anchored Conviction is the discipline that maintains it.

Integrity is the alignment between declared beliefs and observable behaviour. Without it, leaders compromise their stated priorities when pressure creates incentives to diverge. Behavioural Integrity exists to hold that alignment in place.

Accountability is the willingness to assume responsibility for the performance of the enterprise rather than retreating into functional protection. Without it, organisations fragment, and Enterprise-First Accountability is the discipline built to prevent that.

Pressure Distortion is the tendency for urgency, fear or fatigue to distort judgement and behaviour. As pressure rises, leaders may suppress uncomfortable truths, delay decisions, rationalise compromises, or shift responsibility sideways. Relentless Honesty with Reality and Velocity of Decision are the disciplines that counteract it.

What the equation shows

The disciplines multiply, not add. If conviction, integrity or accountability approaches zero, leadership stability collapses regardless of capability. A single weak discipline undermines the whole system rather than merely diluting it.

Pressure distortion operates as a divisor. When it increases without a corresponding increase in the three disciplines, leadership stability deteriorates. The arithmetic is a fair description of how leadership failure actually develops.

Pressure does not create leadership failure. It amplifies the cracks that were already there.

The equation also explains why RESOLVE is a system rather than a checklist. Leaders who are strong in conviction but weak in honesty will hold firmly to a direction based on a distorted picture, while those with integrity but no velocity will recognise the right answer without being able to deliver it. All three disciplines are load-bearing.
