The Leadership Flywheel

Disciplined leadership does more than prevent failure. It generates momentum.

The Failure Sequence describes how leadership erodes. The Flywheel describes the opposite: what happens when the disciplines hold.

The five RESOLVE disciplines, practised consistently, feed each other. They create a self-reinforcing cycle that strengthens the organisation’s ability to lead over time, and each stage of the flywheel produces conditions that make the next stage easier to sustain.

Stage 1 — Reality is confronted

The flywheel begins with Relentless Honesty with Reality. Leaders surface material truth about performance, risk and behaviour without distortion. Uncomfortable information is addressed early rather than managed quietly.

The result: the organisation develops a shared and accurate picture of its actual situation.

Stage 2 — Behaviour aligns with priorities

With a clear picture of reality, leaders can ensure that decisions, resource allocation and conduct genuinely reflect the organisation’s declared priorities. Behavioural Integrity makes the strategy visible in the decisions.

The result: leadership credibility strengthens, because what leaders say and what they do are the same thing.

Stage 3 — Strategic conviction strengthens

As alignment between intention and behaviour improves, confidence in the direction grows. Leaders are able to maintain Anchored Conviction: disciplined commitment to purpose in the presence of pressure, which is a different thing from rigidity.

What follows is greater strategic clarity and stability across the organisation.

Stage 4 — Decisions accelerate

With clear priorities and strong conviction, leaders are able to make timely decisions despite uncertainty. Velocity of Decision improves not because the decisions become easier, but because the framework for making them is clearer.

The result: the organisation responds more effectively to changing conditions.

Stage 5 — Enterprise accountability deepens

As decisions become more consistent, and leaders can see the whole picture clearly, accountability for outcomes becomes less contested. Leaders take responsibility for what the enterprise needs, not just what their function controls.

Collaboration strengthens, and silo behaviour weakens.

The cycle reinforces itself

Stronger enterprise accountability creates conditions where difficult truths are more likely to be surfaced, which feeds back into Stage 1 with greater momentum. Each rotation of the flywheel embeds the disciplines more deeply.

A flywheel does not care how hard you pushed last year. It only holds the momentum you keep feeding it.

The Flywheel matters because it shifts the frame from defence to development. Practised over time, RESOLVE becomes the mechanism by which disciplined leadership reinforces itself. It ends up embedded in the organisation rather than dependent on individual personalities or favourable conditions.
